Indeed, the particular flower in Warhol’s prints is barely identifiable, and critics at the time were unable to name it, which was part of the intrigue. On the other hand, flowers themselves are iconic and timeless, untethered to a particular pop culture reference or idea. The instantly-recognizable Campbell’s Soup Can print is grounded in a particular time, place, and social class, but its popularity made it iconic. Michael Lobel, who wrote an essay entitled In Transition: Warhol’s Flowers, once said that Flowers resonated with the 1960’s fashion set because they regarded the flowers’ simple shapes, bold patterns, and bright colors as promising fixtures of then-contemporary design.Īt the time, Flowers was also a refreshing departure from Warhol’s prints addressing mass culture and brands. Warhol’s interest in flowers spoke to his larger interest in cohering floral elements and fashion– a fascination that still persists in art and sartorial spheres of the modern era. There is something ironic, almost comical about the fact that Warhol went into a lawsuit for using a simple image of flowers after years of replicating copyrighted product labels– as if in Warhol’s hands, even an unassuming subject could become embroiled in confrontation, politics, and the law. When Patricia Caulfield, the photographer of this image, found out, she brought suit against Warhol in 1966 for unauthorized use of her image. But rather than a direct encounter with nature itself, Warhol used a photograph of hibiscus blossoms he found in the 1964 issue of Modern Photography to create these prints. Whereas today the Flowers series may seamlessly blend in with Warhol’s oeuvre, the subject matter was– at the time– a sharp departure for an artist known primarily for his images of brands.Īt this point, one can imagine that the flowers, apolitical and removed from time and space, became an appealing subject. (He created the piece for that year’s New York Art Fair, but the exhibit was censored before it opened.) The project he created previous to this one was a series titled 13 Most Wanted Men, wherein he silkscreened the images of mug shots from the 1962 NYPD booklet. Given Warhol’s previous work, his choice to depict flowers initially seems as though it would have been out of character.

The scientist helps the Rookie to stop the nukes and after 30 kills the player grabs a super soldier suit and reaches the top of the Mech to make one final encounter. After a series of dialogue by Dex, he is promptly crushed by a towering Mech, driven by the GlobeX Leader. The player crosses the map to the other side, and confronts Dex. The remaining heroes are captured, except for the player, and their fate is undetermined as Nathan says "Its all up to you Rookie". Once the team returns to Earth they head to the GlobeX factory, where clones are produced. The Heroes successfully upload the virus at the same space station that was introduced in the beginning of the story, disrupting the clone control signal, although the clones in the factory will be unaffected and will have to be manually shut down. They head into space after being told the clones are controlled from a satellite. They rescue him from a few GlobeX soldiers and bring him to a "secure location", where he assists them by tracing the clone signals, creating a virus, and disabling the guidance system for nuclear missiles. The team decides that the Scientist is their last hope. After a few kills, a clone of Iagi is revealed, after killing the Iagi clone, the team is sent back to square 1, and has no leads on a possible antidote to the quickly approaching clone army. Dex appears, along with a few GlobeX clones, and the heroes begin fighting them. In Iagi's secret lab, they find Iagi on the floor, dead. The team races to stop Dex from killing him. Dex manages to escape and heads to Iagi's mansion to kill him. The team then battles Dex and several GlobeX soldiers fighting with him. Here Dex mentions that someone must have been tipping off GlobeX, and then says West has been acting shady.Īfter the raid at the base Iagi calls West to inform them the serum is complete, after which Dex promptly kills West. Then Nathan, Dex, and the player go off to steal a convoy from GlobeX. He tells the team that the clones are controlled by a single source, and that he will start developing an antidote so they can regain their free will. After 75 points in a Domination match are earned Iagi calls them into his secret lab. The team now goes into the mansion of Iagi and as they arrive, GlobeX ambushes them. However, during an urgent phone call, West was shot by Dex, the traitor. He gives the Team a picture of Iagi, a world famous scientist and tells the team that he can help. The Scientist says that GlobeX are clones of soldiers. Meanwhile the Scientist asks the Strike Force Team for help after the attack. West, Tower, and Jyn stay at the base to prevent GlobeX from breaking into their base again while Nathan, Dex and the player head into the market to find the Scientist. As GlobeX retreats, Nathan states that Alpha squad defeated GlobeX in the last few years with the help of a certain scientist, who Dex, Nathan and the player leave to find. Later Jyn is seen playing his Xbox, while in the background, the GlobeX team infiltrates the Heroes' base. After a few kills Nathan finally announces that the player can finally join the team. They train by fighting each other for the player to get in to the ranks as heroes. The story now kicks in inside the Heroes' base when a new rookie has joined the Strike Force Heroes team (player) after the space station was overrun. They begin to kill as many invaders as possible, but Neil states that there are just too many, and they are overwhelmed. But as he meets with Houston, his commander, they are ambushed by an unknown force. Mick proceeds fix it and returns to the space station. They need to repair the backup generator, so the player (currently a man known as Mick) is sent to fix it. The events of SFH2 take place several years after SFH1, starting with a few astronauts on a space station. These blades will be lighter and quicker to draw.īy going with a shorter blade you also reduce the risk of inaccurate depth perception. If you can’t seem to find something that fits you perfect it’s always safer to go on the shorter end than the longer. In terms of the most common height to nagasa ratio, please reference the table below I made for you. Factors that can influence the exact nagasa (blade length) you need are: skill level, height, and use (iaido, kendo, etc.). There are a ton of forums out there with numerous sizing information so it’s difficult to go with a one size fits all approach, which again is why I suggest talking with a sensei first. Whatever the width is you would then add 3″-4″ to this measurement to provide you with some room on the tsuka. This is where you place your hands down flat on the table side by side so that they are touching, make sure the fingers are closed (as in the image below), then measure the width of them combined (from the left side of the left hand to the right side of the right hand). Forearm Length MethodologyĪnother method that I’ve seen some use is the hand measurement technique. Most katanas will have an 11″ tsuka, so unless you are either very short or very tall you most likely would go with an 11″. It is ok if it isn’t the exact length but I usually do prefer it to be within plus or minus an inch. So from your elbow to your wrist this distance is how long the tsuka should also be. Get out a tape measure or ruler and measure the length of your forearm. To do this you’ll just need a simple measuring tool. This method involves using the length of your forearm to get an idea of how long the tsuka should be. The best way to measure yourself for a blade in my opinion is the tsuka-to-arm-length ratio. You could also seek advice from various online forums (or in our forum here as well) to get feedback on how to size a katana.Īgain, as a little disclaimer remember to use these weapons at your own discretion since they can be very dangerous and anyone using a katana should have the proper training before doing so. However, if you do not have a sensei to go to for advice on these highly specialized weapons, or are just looking for some loose sizing recommendations I can give you the sizing guide that my friends and I go by. I strongly advise talking with your sensei to get the proper length before buying. If you try performing any martial arts with a katana that is too large for you you then run the risk of misjudging your distance from the target, or yourself with the blade which could result in an accidental slash. Why is sizing so important? Well if you enjoy having all of your body parts and intend to keep them then yea it’s kind of important. Depending on what training you are in the length required can vary. The length of the Tsuka (or handle) is very important so that we can have the proper leverage and balance. These are either cheap imitators or solely are used as novelty props or Halloween costumes. If you are looking at any katanas that have plastic for any of these components DO NOT buy them. Sageo (Hanging Cord) – Nylon or leather.Saya (Scabbard) – Commonly wood which can be covered with leather.Habaki (Blade Collar) – Brass, copper, gold, silver, steel.Tsuba (Guard) – Brass, copper, gold, silver, steel.Tsuka (Handle) – A form of steel at the core yet can be wrapped in nylon or leather (occasionally stingray leather).Kashira (Pommel) – Brass, copper, gold, silver, steel.Katana Parts & Common Materials Used In Them: Now other samurai swords such as the Tanto, Iaito, or Wakizashi will have slightly different components as well and vary in their size and use. I made the image below to help you identify the various parts of the katana. The metal itself as we learned in the previous step can come in various steels and forging methods. The tsuka most commonly comes in a leather or nylon wrap but can also come in more unique materials. The nice thing about katanas is that though the parts all have the same name, there can be a wide variation of material used to create them or just in the general aesthetics of the parts.įor example the tsuba alone could come in brass, steel, silver, or gold and can have an infinite number of designs on it. This is important when looking for the optimal katana since it will help you better understand the sword descriptions and what each component is made from. To become proficient in using the sword we need to first understand our weapon from the top down. We also need to go over the various parts of the katana so you can identify each properly. Before you can run out and start buying your next katana to add to your arsenal we must first discuss what size you need by running through a few simple methodologies on how to size a katana. There can be little doubt that these were written to be played by Platti and Rudolf Franz Erwein together. The Ensemble Cordia's programme includes two sonatas for the somewhat unusual combination of oboe and cello. The appreciation of his employers through the years, his excellent salary and his marriage to Maria Theresia Lambrucker, first soprano in the court chapel, were all good reasons to stay the rest of his life in Würzburg. Platti returned to Würzburg, and in 1732 he was appointed second violinist and Kammertenor. In 1729 the new prince-archbishop of Würzburg re-established the court orchestra, which now contained no fewer than 49 members. This could well be an indication of the presence of a highly skilled bassoonist at the court. The Wiesentheid library contains another piece with a virtuoso bassoon part by the Italian composer Brescianelli. Here he problably also composed the Trio for oboe, bassoon and bc in c minor. It was thanks to this connection that he was able to spend the next years at Rudolf's court in Wiesentheid. He was an avid player of the cello, and this inspired Platti to write cello sonatas and compositions with obbligato cello parts, some of which can be heard on this disc. Platti had the good fortune to have built a good relationship with the former prince-archbishop's brother, Rudolf Franz Erwein. Things weren't always bright and wonderful in Platti's career, though: in 1724, just two years after his appointment, his employer died, and his successor disbanded the court orchestra. In 1764 an Italian musician reported Platti's death in a letter to Padre Martini, mentioning him in the same breath as Geminiani and Locatelli. He was the best-paid musician at the court, earning more than twice of what the Kapellmeister received. He not only played the oboe, but also the violin, the cello, the flute and the harpsichord and was active as composer and as teacher. He was held in high esteem by his new employer, who in a letter called him an "incomparable oboist". Here he became the principal oboist at the court of Prince-Archbishop Lothar Franz von Schönborn in Würzburg. It was perhaps because he felt that under these circumstances his chances to make a career were rather slim that he moved to Germany. These included Vivaldi, the Marcello brothers, Gasparini and Albinoni. He was born in Venice in a time when many famous masters of music were active. That is also the case with the first disc: with one exception all sonatas have been recorded before.Īs Platti is still a largely unknown quantity it is useful to give some background information. His oeuvre isn't that large, and therefore most recordings contain more or less the same repertoire. 5,10 (D-WD 544)ĭuring the last about five years various recordings with music by Giovanni Benedetto Platti have been released. 5,5 (D-WD 541) Ĭoncerto grosso in F after Corelli's Sonata op. 5,4 (D-WD 540) Ĭoncerto grosso in g minor after Corelli's Sonata op.
